On 3rd December 2009, the first purpose-built facility for therapeutic riding in Serbia was built and officially opened at the Belgrade Racecourse. After the exceptional therapeutic value of riding for the disabled and for the people with special needs in general had been established, this type of recreation and therapy has seen great momentum in the world. After opening the riding areas, Belgrade became the reference point for all of Serbia and the region when it comes to this modern and extremely valuable aspect of working with people with special needs. And so far there have been efforts in this area worth of attention, but the object, at the head of which were the Ministry of Youth and Sport of the Republic of Serbia and PE “Belgrade Racecourse”, brings for the first time the possibility for the potentials of this form of recreation and treatment of disabled people, to be developed in full-scale and in a professional manner. The construction of this park contributes much to the inclusion of these persons in the normal flow of life. It will help many of them to speed up the rehabilitation and socialization process, and it presents valuable contribution to Serbia in its inclusion in contemporary European trends.

Hippotherapy

Hippotherapy is the physiotherapy treatment on the basis of a neurophysiological indications (cause / disease) with horses and riding.

Target groups

People with impaired central nervous system (CNS):

  • Paralysis of half the body
  • Tumors of the CNS
  • MS patients
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Cranial brain damage
  • Various syndromes

Effect

The base of hippotherapeutic work consists of related movements of the horse and man. When the horse moves the transfer of the three-dimensional impulses of swings from horse to a patient who rides it occurs. In this dialogue of movements the patient reacts to the action outside.

  • The physiological pattern of movement can thus be transmitted and stored.
  • The manner of movement that was lost due to disease may re-establish and improve.

The rider gets the stimulation through the horse moving.

The framework conditions for the implementation of therapy

  • Treatment is performed with the patient individually
  • Medical report is prior to treatment
  • Treatment is carried out on a horse who is trained for the use of therapy
  • The horse is kept on a leash
  • The horse is equipped with special harness or saddle
  • Sitting on a horse is done using special cranes
  • Hippotherpist is supported always by one horse guide and in a given case, an additional helper

Hippotherapist must have the following skills and knowledge:

  • Education in Physiotherapy
  • Good riding skills
  • Knowledge of horsemanship as well as of analysis of the movement of horses and humans
  • Knowledge of rein management, lunging and special types of training
  • Knowledge of technology of hippotherapy implementation
  • Knowledge of training and horse care used for purposes of treatment
  • Knowledge of the technique of choosing horses for therapy appropriate for treatment plan
  • Knowledge of extra funds

Educational therapy with horses

"Educational therapy with horses” refers to pedagogical, psychotherapeutic, rehabilitative socialintegrational programs with horses for children, youth and adults with disabilities. This does not include the development of riding skills, but individual development of ability for dialogue and social competence through horses as a medium.

Target group

Offer applies to children, adolescents and adults with:

  • Disruption of development in the area of perception, motor skills, social behavior, communication and language
  • Mental disorders
  • Disruption in learning process

Pedagogical goals of therapy using horses and riding

Educational therapy using horses offers possibilities of improvement in the following areas of development:

  • Perception and motor skills
  • Social behavior
  • Communication and language
  • Mental processes and emotions

The framework conditions for the implementation of beneficial educational improvement using horses

Individual or group therapies - Group size: 3 to 6 children, youth or adults
    Duration of оne treatment: one hour tо an hour and a half at least once a week
    Duration of whole treatment: one to four years
    Riding Area: dimensions of at least 20x20m, hall or enclosed outdoor area
    Horse is trained for sport riding and high voltage riding

The therapist must have the following skills and knowledge:

  • Education pedagogy or psychiatry
  • Good riding skills
  • Knowledge of lunging and high voltage riding
  • Methodological-didactic and pedagogic knowledge of beneficial riding
  • Understanding of the ways of horse training and horse care used for these purposes
  • Making the right decisions for the selection of horses for therapy, appropriate for treatment plan

Trainer in riding as a sport for people with disabilities

Riding as a sport for people with disabilities includes sport riding education with people with disabilities.

Target group

Riders with physical disabilities - lack of body parts / limbs (eg. after amputation)
    Difficult mobility phenomena
    Other problems:
        Riders with sensory impairments
        Sight impairment
        Hearing impairment
        Riders with mental disorders

The framework conditions for the implementation of riding sport for people with disabilities

  • Well-trained horses
  • Hall for riding or fenced area outside with a good ground base
  • Equipment for people with disabilities (aids for climbing, toilet, etc.)
  • Ability to use assistive devices as needed (eg. special saddle)
  • Courses for teachers of riding, which are trained for sport for persons with disabilites
  • Medical certificate confirming riding does not present a health risk

Trainer in riding as a sport for people with disabilities must have the following skills and knowledge:

  • Good riding skills
  • Knowledge of hurdle with a horse on a long leash and lunging
  • Knowledge of specifics in dealing with people with developmental disabilities
  • Knowledge of didactics and teaching methodology
  • Knowledge of the use of assistive devices
